Makalawena beach
Ultimate guide (December 2024)
Makalawena is a beach to the north of Kona Airport on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is possible to get here by foot only - from the entrance to Kekaha National Park (about half an hour walking). The road itself is scenic, while the beach is beautiful as well. It has occasional areas with sandy bottom. There are no any kind of services. But on the other hand, there is a ranger keeping seals from being disturbed by the tourists. The place never becomes overcrowded. However, even early in the morning, there will be about 10-20 visitors, and even more during the daytime. Shore and seabed: sand, stones.
